Cardiovascular Risk Marker Panel, Serum
Use
The Cardiovascular Risk Marker Panel is utilized for the assessment of the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, major adverse cardiovascular events, or ischemic cerebrovascular events. It includes measurement of lipoprotein cholesterol which is essential in managing risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a condition defined by plaque buildup in arterial walls. Lipoprotein (a), Apolipoprotein B, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein are key serological risk factors used to augment risk classification and guide intensity of risk-reduction therapy.
Special Instructions
Fasting for 12 hours is preferred for accurate results, but it is not mandatory unless directed by the ordering provider. If not ordering electronically, complete the Cardiovascular Test Request Form and send it with the specimen.
Limitations
Consuming alcohol or fatty foods 24 hours prior to specimen collection can increase serum triglycerides. Calculated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is not applicable when triglycerides are greater than 800 mg/dL. Results may be affected by elevated levels of certain metabolites like N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine from medications such as acetaminophen.
