Cashew Component, IgE, Serum
Use
Evaluation of patients with suspected cashew allergy to component Ana o 3. Cashew allergies, associated with severe reactions, often present in young children. Ana o 3 is a stable storage protein in cashews, linked to anaphylactic reactions, making cashew allergies particularly dangerous and persistent. Detecting IgE antibodies to Ana o 3 helps in identifying cashew sensitivity, which may lead to life-threatening reactions and requires careful clinical management.
Special Instructions
Cashew component IgE testing is only orderable as a reflex if the total cashew-specific IgE is 0.10 kU/L or more. This test aids in determining the specific allergenic component in suspected cashew allergy cases. This testing requires specific IgE evaluation after obtaining an initial cashew-specific IgE result.
Limitations
Negative results for IgE antibodies against cashew nut extract or allergenic components do not wholly exclude possible allergic responses. Positive IgE results indicate potential sensitization but are not diagnostic of allergy. False positives may occur with high IgE levels, and results may not be reliable in patients undergoing immunotherapy or those with nonspecific binding due to elevated IgE levels. Cross-reactivity and nonspecific binding are possible due to carbohydrate determinants.
