Cat Epithelium, IgE, with Reflex to Cat Epithelium Components, IgE, Serum
Use
The Cat Epithelium, IgE test helps in evaluating patients with suspected cat allergies. It measures the IgE antibodies to total cat dander initially. If the presence of specific IgE antibodies is detected at or above the threshold level, additional testing for IgE antibodies to specific cat epithelium components, namely Fel d 1, Fel d 2, Fel d 4, and Fel d 7, is performed. This provides detailed insight into the patient's specific sensitivities and the potential strength of allergic responses, which aids in the assessment of allergic conditions such as asthma, rhinitis, and dermatitis linked to cat exposure.
Special Instructions
If ordering manually, ensure completion of the Allergen Test Request form. Provide the preferred Serum gel collection container, or an acceptable red top tube can be used. Specimen submission in a plastic vial is required.
Limitations
Negative results for IgE to total cat dander do not exclude the possibility of clinically relevant allergic responses to cats. Positive results are not solely diagnostic of cat allergy, indicating potential sensitization to cat epithelia or cross-reactive allergens. In vivo patient history correlation is recommended.
