Celery, IgE, Serum
Use
The Celery, IgE, Serum test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to celery. It helps in defining the specific allergen responsible for eliciting clinical signs and symptoms associated with allergic disorders, including identifying allergens responsible for allergic reactions and anaphylactic episodes. This test is also useful in confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens such as insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, nor is it beneficial for patients whose medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Some individuals may have measurable levels of IgE without clinical significance. Test results must be interpreted in the clinical context, considering possible false-positive results due to nonspecific binding, especially in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L).
