Cerebrospinal Fluid IgG Index Profile, Serum and Spinal Fluid
Use
This test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and other central nervous system inflammatory conditions. It measures the IgG index in CSF compared to serum IgG and albumin levels, which can reflect local synthesis in the CNS, indicative of conditions like neurosyphilis, acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy, and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.
Special Instructions
Both serum and spinal fluid specimens are required for this test. Serum specimens should be centrifuged and aliquoted into two plastic vials within 2 hours of collection.
Limitations
The test may also show elevated values in other inflammatory demyelinating diseases, not solely due to multiple sclerosis. Specimen collection and handling are crucial, as improper procedures can lead to elevated results.
