Cheese, Cheddar, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to cheddar cheese by identifying a specific allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It is also used to confirm sensitization to cheddar cheese prior to immunotherapy and to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens. It is not useful in patients who have been previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or when the management does not depend on allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
Perform this test to determine the patient's IgE-mediated allergic sensitivity to cheddar cheese. It aids in confirming specific allergen sensitization before beginning an immunotherapy regimen. Ensure proper specimen collection and handling as per the provided guidelines in special instructions.
Limitations
False-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to non-specific binding. Results must be interpreted within the clinical context as some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may nevertheless have measurable IgE levels. Repeat testing is necessary to confirm residual sensitization following immunotherapy.
