Chicken Serum Proteins, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to chicken serum proteins and for defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It is particularly beneficial for identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses such as anaphylactic episodes and to confirm sensitization prior to starting immunotherapy. Additionally, it helps to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to substances like insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
Special instructions include centrifuging and aliquoting serum into a plastic vial. If not ordering electronically, complete and submit an Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in cases where the medical management does not require identification of allergen specificity. Additionally, false positives may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases.
