Chikungunya IgG, Antibody, Serum
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of recent Chikungunya virus infection by detecting IgG antibodies in patients who have traveled recently to endemic areas and present with compatible symptoms. Chikungunya virus is a single-stranded RNA alphavirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and it is associated with symptoms such as high fever, incapacitating joint pain, and rash. The test provides significant information for the healthcare provider to assess recent infection and provide appropriate care. Patients with suspected infection may also require concurrent testing for other co-circulating viruses like Dengue.
Special Instructions
The test is not individually orderable and must be requested as part of a profile. Collection involves centrifuging and aliquoting serum into a plastic vial. Serum gel is preferred for collection, but a red top tube is also acceptable. The specimen should be refrigerated and is stable for up to 30 days under such conditions. Testing is performed on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, and results are typically available the same day to up to 14 days later.
Limitations
The test may yield false-negative results if the specimen is collected too soon following infection, as antibodies may not yet be detectable. Cross-reactivity with other alphaviruses is possible, and results should be considered in conjunction with clinical presentation and exposure history. There is no licensed vaccine for Chikungunya, and the disorder can present similarly to other infections like Dengue, requiring comprehensive evaluation.
