Chikungunya IgM and IgG, Antibody, Serum
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of recent or past infection with the Chikungunya virus, particularly in patients who have recently traveled to endemic regions and display compatible clinical symptoms. The presence of IgM antibodies is typically detectable 3 to 4 days after the onset of symptoms and remains for 3 to 4 months. IgG antibodies appear 6 to 7 days after symptom onset and can persist for years, indicating past infection or immunity.
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected during the convalescent period as early collection may yield negative results for the antibodies. Ensure samples are centrifuged and serum aliquoted into a plastic vial for submission.
Limitations
The test may yield negative results if specimens are collected too early following infection. Co-circulation of Dengue and Chikungunya viruses in endemic areas may result in cross-reactivity. Patients are advised to be evaluated for both infections if clinically suspected. Confirmatory testing at a public health laboratory is recommended when positive.
