Chikungunya Interpretation
Use
Interpretation of testing aids in diagnosing recent infection with Chikungunya virus in patients with recent travel to endemic areas and a compatible clinical syndrome. The virus is endemic in Africa, India, and recently in the Caribbean islands. Symptoms include high fever, joint pain, and rash. The disease is transmitted by Aedes species mosquitos, with humans as the primary reservoir. Once exposed, individuals develop lasting immunity.
Special Instructions
Only orderable as part of a profile. For more information, see CHIKV / Chikungunya IgM and IgG, Antibody, Serum.
Limitations
Specimens collected too early after infection may be negative for antibodies to Chikungunya virus. Testing of convalescent serum is recommended. Chikungunya and Dengue viruses co-circulate in endemic areas, and infections can present similarly. Evaluate at-risk patients for both viruses.
