Chlamydia trachomatis, Nucleic Acid Amplification, Varies
Use
Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Timely detection allows for effective antibiotic treatment, reducing complications such as infertility in women and providing an opportunity for sexual partners to be tested and treated, ultimately limiting the spread of the infection. This test is critical for screening sexually active women up to age 25 and older women at risk. It is also recommended for all pregnant women to prevent neonatal complications, including conjunctivitis and pneumonia.
Special Instructions
Order forms must include specimens' source information. The New York state approval ensures that the test can be ordered for clients in New York. Specimens must be collected using the specified Aptima collection kits, with exact procedures for each specimen type outlined in the provided instructions.
Limitations
This test is not intended for legal applications and is not suitable for detecting other Chlamydia species. Its performance has not been validated in patients younger than 14 years or in pregnant women for vaginal swab specimens. False negatives can occur due to improper specimen collection, concurrent antibiotics, or very low organisms' concentration. False positives are possible in low-prevalence settings; results should be interpreted judiciously alongside clinical indicators.
