Cholesterol, High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Serum
Use
Measurement of serum high-density lipoprotein concentrations is useful for managing the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease as it facilitates the reverse cholesterol transport. This test is often ordered along with total cholesterol to calculate non-HDL cholesterol, which is directly associated with cardiovascular disease risk.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send the cardiovascular test request form with the specimen. Fasting for 8 hours is preferred for sample collection but not mandatory unless explicitly directed by the ordering provider.
Limitations
The results can be falsely reduced in the presence of elevated levels of N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and metamizole. Extremely low HDL values may indicate liver disease or inherited dyslipidemia, and medications to increase HDL levels have failed to reduce cardiovascular disease.
