Chyluria Screen, Random, Urine
Use
Aiding in the diagnosis of chyluria (galacturia). Chyluria is a medical condition in which chyle—a milky fluid containing lymph, chylomicrons, and fats—is present in the urine. It may occur due to parasitic infections (e.g., Wuchereria bancrofti) primarily in tropical regions, or nonparasitic causes such as traumatic lesions, tumors, lymphangioma, pregnancy, or granulomatous infections. Urinary cholesterol and triglyceride values are normally less than 10 mg/dL; elevated triglyceride levels may indicate chyluria. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and certain metabolites like N-acetyl‑p‑benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), N-acetylcysteine, and metamizole may interfere and falsely decrease results. All specimens are evaluated for suitability at Mayo Clinic Laboratories. Minimum volume is 15 mL of random or first‑morning urine, collected without recent high vitamin C intake.
Special Instructions
Patient should not ingest foods or beverages rich in vitamin C or take vitamin C supplements prior to collection. Collect a first‑morning random urine specimen in a plastic, 60 mL urine container (T313). Indicate patient's age and sex is necessary for test requisition. All specimens will be evaluated upon receipt.
Limitations
Interference from ascorbic acid which can falsely decrease cholesterol and triglyceride measurements; other interfering substances include NAPQI (an acetaminophen metabolite), N‑acetylcysteine, and metamizole. Specimens may be rejected if unsuitable—though criteria not specified beyond that all specimens are evaluated for suitability.
