Clam, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to clam by identifying the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It helps in identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes and confirming sensitization prior to initiating immunotherapy. Additionally, it assists in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions, including those related to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. When ordering manually, complete and send the Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen. Collect specimen in a serum gel or red top tube; centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial. Volume requirements vary based on allergen count.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity or in cases where medical management doesn't require identification of allergen specificity. False-positive results can occur in patients with elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to non-specific binding.
