Coccidioides Antibody Screen with Reflex, Serum
Use
This test is useful for detecting antibodies to Coccidioides immitis/posadasii. It can aid in diagnosing infections with Coccidioides species, complementing other routine laboratory testing such as fungal culture. It is important to note that this assay should not be used for monitoring response to therapy, as a reactive result is not indicative of an acute infection due to the presence of antibodies from a previous infection.
Special Instructions
If the result is reactive, the test will reflex to Coccidioides by complement fixation and immunodiffusion, which will incur an additional charge. It is designed for the qualitative detection of both IgM- and IgG-class antibodies against antigens from Coccidioides, without indicating which class is present.
Limitations
Results should be correlated with clinical history, epidemiologic data, and other laboratory evidence. Reactive results do not indicate acute infection as antibodies may be present from previous infections. Negative results do not preclude a diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis as antibody levels might not yet be detectable. Rarely, cross-reactivity may occur with other dimorphic fungal agents, so all positive results must be confirmed by complement fixation and immunodiffusion.
