Cockroach, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for diagnosing an allergy to cockroach allergens. It helps in defining the specific allergen responsible for eliciting allergic signs and symptoms, which can be crucial for confirming sensitization before starting immunotherapy. Additionally, it helps identify the allergen responsible for an anaphylactic episode and is useful in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to different allergens, including insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. This test measures IgE antibodies in the serum, which indicate immune responses to allergens that might be related to allergic disease.
Special Instructions
For ordering this test without electronic systems, complete, print, and send the Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen. The specimen should be centrifuged, and serum aliquoted into a plastic vial.
Limitations
The test for IgE antibodies is not recommended for patients who have previously undergone immunotherapy for the same allergen, or in patients where medical management is not dependent on identifying allergen specificity. False-positive results may occur in patients with high total serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. The clinical significance of IgE levels needs to be interpreted in the context of the patient's clinical history.
