Codfish, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is used for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to codfish, identifying the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens including insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens. It assists in the detection of IgE antibodies which indicate an increased likelihood of allergic disease.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the provided Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen. The test is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy for determining if residual clinical sensitivity exists.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum. Results may be false-positive in patients with elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. The interpretation of results must consider the clinical context and the potential for false positives.
