Cryptococcus Antigen Screen with Titer, Serum
Use
This test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of cryptococcosis, an invasive fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii. It is particularly indicated in patients who may be immunocompromised, as these populations are at higher risk for infection. The presence of cryptococcal antigen in any body fluid, such as serum, is indicative of cryptococcosis.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used as a test of cure or to guide treatment decisions and is not intended as a screening procedure for the general population. If the result is positive, a Cryptococcus titer will be performed at an additional charge.
Limitations
A negative test result does not rule out cryptococcosis, especially if only one specimen is tested and the patient exhibits symptoms consistent with cryptococcosis. Testing should be driven by clinical suspicion of cryptococcal disease. False-negative results may occur with hemolyzed serum specimens due to high background color on the test strip. Extremely high concentrations of cryptococcal antigen may result in weak test lines or negative test results. The assay has not been evaluated for cross-reactivity with trichosporonosis.
