Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Molecular Detection, PCR, Varies
Use
This test is used for the rapid qualitative detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA. It is particularly significant in diagnosing CMV infections in immunocompromised patients, as CMV infection can lead to severe disease in such populations. The test is crucial in identifying infections in patients with a history of transplant or in individuals who are susceptible to neurological complications due to CMV. CMV detection through this assay helps in the clinical diagnosis of CMV-related infections but is not used for monitoring disease progression.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is required; include the main anatomical site of collection. For plasma specimens, order CMVQN / Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA Detection and Quantification by Real-Time PCR, Plasma. For lower respiratory specimens, order CMVLR / Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Molecular Detection, PCR, Lower Respiratory. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Microbiology Test Request form with the specimen.
Limitations
A negative result does not eliminate the possibility of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The assay should be used only in patients with a clinical history and symptoms consistent with CMV infection and must be interpreted in the context of the clinical picture. CMV DNA might not be detected in central nervous system infections if the sample lacks sufficient viral load or differs from the symptomatic site.
