Desmin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test helps in the identification of striated and smooth muscle cells, as well as tumors derived from these cell types, such as leiomyosarcomas and rhabdomyosarcomas. Desmin is an intermediate filament protein found in muscle cells, and its presence can indicate myogenic origin in neoplastic tissues.
Special Instructions
This test is for the technical component only and does not include pathologist interpretation. It should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation as the technical component stains will be canceled if ordered together.
Limitations
The test only performs the staining process, and interpretation must be done by a qualified pathologist using the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests. The age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and stability thresholds vary among literature. Environmental factors can affect slide chemistry, leading to inconsistent staining.
