Dilute Russell’s Viper Venom Time (DRVVT), Plasma
Use
The Dilute Russell's Viper Venom Time (DRVVT) test is utilized for detecting and confirming the presence of lupus anticoagulants (LA), which are antibodies that increase the risk of blood clots. It helps distinguish LA that do not prolong the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and evaluates unexplained prolongation of APTT or prothrombin time clotting tests. The test can also differentiate LA from specific coagulation factor inhibitors or deficiencies.
Special Instructions
This test is not directly orderable; it is only part of profiles or reflex testing. Profiles include the Lupus Anticoagulant Profile, Thrombophilia Profile, Prolonged Clot Time Profile, and Bleeding Diathesis Profile. Reflex testing is performed if the initial DRVVT ratio is ≥1.20.
Limitations
The DRVVT may show prolonged results due to LA, coagulation factor deficiencies, anticoagulant effects, or other factor inhibitors. False positives can occur with anticoagulation therapy, and certain LA may not be detected by this method alone, requiring additional assays. Residual platelets in samples can lead to false negatives, and sample handling errors can affect results. Interpret results with caution if samples were collected during anticoagulation therapy.
