Donath Landsteiner
Use
The Donath Landsteiner test is used to diagnose paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria (PCH), a rare condition usually associated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia. It involves the presence of a biphasic autoantibody that attaches to red blood cells in the cold and induces lysis upon warming. The test is critical for confirming the diagnosis, especially in cases lacking clear clinical history or presentation.
Special Instructions
Maintain specimen at 37 degrees C until after centrifugation. This is critical to ensure the stability of the sample for accurate testing. Ensure that all collection and transport procedures are followed as specified to avoid sample rejection.
Limitations
The test may yield false-negative results if the specimen is not handled according to specified requirements, particularly temperature constraints. Gross hemolysis, lipemia, and icterus can affect the validity of the test results leading to possible specimen rejection. Interpret test results in conjunction with clinical findings and other diagnostic results.
