Drugs of Abuse Screen, Serum
Use
The Drugs of Abuse Screen, Serum is employed to screen for the presence of various illicit drugs and their metabolites in the serum. This includes detecting substances such as opiates, cocaine/metabolites, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, amphetamines, barbiturates, methadone/metabolite, phencyclidine, fentanyl/acetyl fentanyl, methamphetamine/MDMA, and oxycodone/oxymorphone. It serves as a critical tool in clinical settings for the monitoring of drug use and potential abuse, assisting in both diagnostic and therapeutic processes.
Special Instructions
This test mandates the submission of one specimen per order and prohibits the sharing of specimens between multiple orders. A plain red-top tube should be used for collection, and serum gel tubes are not acceptable. The serum should be centrifuged and sent refrigerated in a plastic, preservative-free vial.
Limitations
While the test is designed to screen for a broad spectrum of drugs of abuse, it is not exhaustive and does not cover all possible substances and their metabolites. False positives and negatives can occur, and as such, results should be confirmed with additional testing. Confirmation testing, if appropriate, will incur additional charges and is dependent on the initial test outcomes.
