Elder, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to elder, defining the allergen responsible for eliciting allergic signs and symptoms, and identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. It confirms sensitization prior to immunotherapy and investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to allergens such as insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy or when medical management does not rely on allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For ordering, if not done electronically, the Allergen Test Request form (T236) must be completed and submitted with the specimen. The test is performed Monday through Friday. Ensure the submitted serum sample is centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial. Refrigerate the serum if possible, otherwise freeze for longer storage.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies, resulting in false-positive results in patients with highly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding. Report interpretation must take into account the clinical context, considering the patient's history and clinical presentation.
