Entamoeba histolytica Antibody, Serum
Use
Entamoeba histolytica Antibody, Serum test is used primarily to assist in the diagnosis of extraintestinal, invasive amebiasis. Amebiasis is an infection caused by the protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica, often leading to liver and lung abscesses due to invasive disease. This serological test can help support the diagnosis of such conditions, particularly amebic liver abscess, as the serology is known to play a crucial role in providing evidence of invasive disease associated with E. histolytica infection.
Special Instructions
Direct detection of Entamoeba histolytica in fecal specimens is recommended for diagnosing intestinal amebiasis. It is suggested to refer to OPE / Ova and Parasite, Travel History or Immunocompromised, Feces or OAPNS / Ova and Parasite, Microscopy, Varies. Completing and sending an Infectious Disease Serology Test Request form with the specimen is required if ordering is not done electronically.
Limitations
This serological test is not recommended for identifying or diagnosing acute intestinal amebiasis or noninvasive disease due to its poor sensitivity in these cases. False positives may occur due to previous episodes of intestinal amebiasis resulting in a positive serology. Moreover, serological results should only be used as an aid and not be interpreted as definitive diagnostic evidence on their own.
