Enterovirus, Molecular Detection, PCR, Varies
Use
The Enterovirus Molecular Detection PCR test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of enterovirus infections. Enteroviruses are positive-sense RNA viruses in the Picornaviridae family. They are common causes of upper respiratory tract diseases in children and central nervous system diseases, including aseptic meningitis and myocarditis, in various patient populations. Real-time PCR detection of enterovirus nucleic acid is a sensitive diagnostic method for central nervous system infections caused by these viruses. This test should not be used for screening asymptomatic patients.
Special Instructions
This assay is qualitative, and results are reported as either negative or positive for targeted enterovirus RNA. Specimen source information, including the anatomical site of collection, is required. This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Mayo Clinic in a manner consistent with CLIA requirements; it has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
Limitations
A negative result does not rule out the possibility of enterovirus infection. This assay may detect virus from a variety of specimen types in asymptomatic individuals and should be used only for patients with clinical symptoms consistent with enterovirus infection. The test cannot reliably distinguish between enterovirus and rhinovirus and has variable detection of parechovirus serotypes.
