Epithelial Membrane Antigen (EMA) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The Epithelial Membrane Antigen (EMA), also known as mucin 1, is expressed by epithelial cells of all types, mesothelial cells, perineural cells, and a subset of plasma cells. It is notably expressed by meningiomas, synovial sarcoma, epithelioid sarcoma, and some lymphoma types. EMA is used diagnostically to recognize epithelial derivation in poorly differentiated malignant tumors. Additionally, it assists in subtyping intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms when used with a panel of mucin markers including MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide pathologist interpretation. If interpretation is required, a separate Pathology Consultation order should be made. Orders including this test with a PATHC will result in cancellation of the technical component stain.
Limitations
The test is purely technical and does not include pathologist interpretation. The age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity due to antigen degradation over time. The characteristics of glass slides, affected by environmental factors, may result in inconsistent staining. Best practices suggest minimizing storage time of slides after unpackaging, and limiting exposure to humidity and heat.
