Estradiol Free, Serum (includes Estradiol and SHBG)
Use
This test measures the levels of free estradiol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in serum. Free estradiol is a biologically active form of estrogen in the body. Evaluation of free estradiol levels can provide information about hormonal balance, ovarian function, and certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency, or estrogen-producing tumors. Monitoring estradiol levels is also essential for assessing fertility and managing hormone replacement therapies.
Special Instructions
Sample collection must ensure rapid processing; centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial within 45 minutes, then freeze immediately. Ensure samples remain frozen during transport to preserve the integrity of the specimen. Avoid plasma samples as they are not accepted for this test.
Limitations
False results may occur if the specimen is not collected, processed, or stored as recommended. Hemolysis, lipemia, or icteric samples may interfere with the test. It is essential to consider pre-analytical factors such as the patient's health status, medication, and hormonal therapies, as they may influence estradiol and SHBG levels. This test is not FDA cleared or approved and should be used in conjunction with other clinical assessments.
