Estradiol, Rapid, Immunoassay, Serum
Use
This test is useful for rapid assessment of ovarian status, including follicle development, which is relevant for assisted reproduction protocols such as in vitro fertilization. It can help in establishing the time of ovulation and determining the optimal time for conception. Estradiol measurements are also utilized clinically for fertility disorders, monitoring fertility therapy, and determining the timing of ovulation induction in IVF studies.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used when monitoring estradiol concentrations in patients being treated with fulvestrant due to possible cross-reactivity. Instead, estradiol concentrations for those patients should be measured using mass spectrometry. Moreover, for 12 hours before specimen collection, the patient should not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin.
Limitations
The preferred method for measurement of low serum estradiol concentrations in children, men, and postmenopausal women is liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. This test should not be used for patients treated with fulvestrant. Potential interferences may occur due to human anti-animal antibodies, leading to falsely elevated or decreased results. High titers of analyte-specific antibodies, streptavidin, or ruthenium can also interfere. The limit of quantitation for estradiol measured by immunoassay is 25 pg/mL.
