Estriol, Unconjugated, Serum
Use
This test is used as an adjunct biomarker in the prenatal diagnosis of disorders of fetal steroid metabolism, such as Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome and X-linked ichthyosis. It is also useful in evaluating primary or secondary fetal adrenal insufficiency after other rare single gene defects have been excluded, including aromatase deficiency, 17 alpha-hydroxylase deficiency, and various forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Special Instructions
Estriol, Unconjugated, S is primarily used in prenatal screenings for specific steroid metabolism disorders and adrenal insufficiency in fetuses. Special attention should be given to the presence of antibodies against animal immunoglobulins, which may cause interference in some immunoassays.
Limitations
The test may be affected by the presence of antibodies to mouse or other animal antibodies, known as human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA), which may cause interference in immunoassays. If results do not align with clinical presentation, further investigation may be required, including notifying the laboratory to retest or revalidate the assay performance.
