Fatty Acid Profile, Comprehensive (C8-C26), Serum
Use
This test is useful for monitoring patients undergoing diet therapy for mitochondrial or peroxisomal disorders, which may induce essential fatty acid deficiency due to restricted fat intake. It is also used for monitoring the treatment of essential fatty acid deficiency and the response to provocative tests like fasting and loading tests. Additionally, the test provides comprehensive information regarding mitochondrial and peroxisomal fatty acid metabolism and the patient's nutritional status.
Special Instructions
Patient's age is required for test evaluation. Include information regarding treatment, family history, and tentative diagnosis. For nutritional assessment, a 12-hour fast is required, though infants or those suspected of a fatty acid oxidation disorder should not fast. Alcohol must not be consumed 24 hours before specimen collection.
Limitations
This test is not the recommended initial screening for possible peroxisomal disorders, single-enzyme defects of peroxisomal metabolism, or peroxisomal biogenesis disorders. Alternative tests like POXP / Fatty Acid Profile, Peroxisomal (C22-C26), Plasma or POX / Fatty Acid Profile, Peroxisomal (C22-C26), Serum are preferable for such cases. Specimen may be rejected due to gross lipemia. Serum stability is best preserved by freezing, but it can be refrigerated for limited time storage.
