Fatty Acid Profile, Essential, Plasma
Use
This test is used for evaluating the nutritional intake and intestinal absorption of essential fatty acids using plasma specimens. It helps in identifying deficiencies of essential and other nutritionally beneficial fatty acids, and in monitoring treatment of patients with essential fatty acid deficiencies, especially those receiving linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid.
Special Instructions
Patient's age is required. Include information regarding treatment, family history, and tentative diagnosis. For nutritional assessment, a 12-hour fast is required.
Limitations
Prolonged fasting is contraindicated for patients with suspected fatty acid oxidation disorder, as it can lead to acute metabolic decompensation. Infants should have the specimen collected after the longest fast possible and just before feeding.
