Finch Feathers, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to finch feathers and defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It helps in identifying allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episode. It can confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and is used to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies on the Mayo Clinic Laboratories site. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen. The assay uses serum gel as the preferred collection container; red top is acceptable. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine whether residual clinical sensitivity exists. Patients in whom the medical management does not depend upon the identification of allergen specificity may not benefit from this test. False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases.
