Food-Fruit Panel, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to apple, banana, peach, and pear. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, identifying allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episode, confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or if medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
This multi-allergen IgE antibody panel combines the measurement of IgE in serum and is an appropriate first-order test for allergic disease. However, individual allergen responses cannot be identified. Follow-up testing is required in case of a positive test to differentiate between individual allergens in the panel.
Limitations
The panel generates only a single qualitative class result and concentration for the pooled allergen reagent. It is not useful for detecting individual (single) allergen reactions. False-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Furthermore, some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies. These results must be interpreted in the clinical context.
