Food-Nut Panel # 2, Serum
Use
This test is used for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to cashew, pecan, pistachio, and walnut. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms and is useful for investigating the specificity of allergic reactions, as well as confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy. The test is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy or where medical management does not depend on identifying allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
This IgE antibody panel uses a pooled allergen reagent and reports a single qualitative class result and concentration per panel. The panel is appropriate as a first-order test for allergic diseases but cannot identify individual allergen responses. Follow-up testing is recommended in case of a positive result to differentiate between the allergens in the panel.
Limitations
The test provides only a pooled allergen result rather than individual allergen results. It may yield false-positive results in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding. The presence of IgE antibodies may still indicate clinically insignificant sensitivity in some individuals and must be interpreted in the clinical context.
