Food Panel, Serum
Use
This test is used for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to various food allergens such as codfish, cow's milk, egg white, peanut, soybean, and wheat. It aids in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting allergic responses and confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy. Testing for IgE antibodies can help in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to different substances.
Special Instructions
This test is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy and in cases where medical management does not depend on identifying specific allergens. It uses a pooled allergen reagent and reports a single qualitative class result and concentration. If the test is positive, follow-up testing is necessary to identify individual allergens.
Limitations
The test is not specific for individual allergens due to the use of pooled reagents, and follow-up testing is necessary to differentiate between individual allergens. It is not suitable for patients with clinically insignificant sensitivity, as they may still have identifiable IgE antibodies. The test does not provide exact quantitative levels of IgE for individual allergens.
