Fructosamine, Serum
Use
Fructosamine is used to monitor intermediate (1-3 weeks) glycemic control in diabetic patients. It is helpful in monitoring glycemic control in patients with shortened red blood cell survival. Fructosamine provides a measure of the average glucose concentration over a shorter period than hemoglobin A1c, reflecting changes in diabetes management more quickly.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send General Request (T239) with the specimen. Serum gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection, and red-top tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted within 2 hours as well.
Limitations
As the assay is non-specific, interferences can come from ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and elevated bilirubin values. Despite this, second-generation assays have been shown to be highly specific for glycated proteins. It should be noted that fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c remain the preferred means of monitoring glycemic control, as they are usually more precise.
