Fungal Smear, Varies
Use
Detection of fungi in clinical specimens is critical for diagnosing fungal infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals. As many fungi occur naturally in the environment, they can cause severe disease in humans with weakened immune systems, such as those with AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy. Diagnosing fungal diseases often requires isolating and identifying the fungus in a laboratory setting, as clinical symptoms may not provide sufficient information for a precise diagnosis.
Special Instructions
The specimen source must be provided when submitting samples. For optimal results, fresh tissue or body fluid specimens are preferred over swabs due to the potential low yield of fungi recovery from swabs. Ensure specimens arrive at the lab within 24 hours of collection. If both fungal and bacterial cultures are requested, separate swabs must be submitted in individual media tubes.
Limitations
The test's proper performance relies on appropriate specimen collection and handling. Inappropriately collected specimens may lead to inconclusive or false results. Swab specimens generally provide low yield for fungal recovery compared to fluid or tissue samples, and the presence of certain substances may interfere with the test, although no significant cautionary statements were noted. Negative results do not preclude the presence of fungal infections if clinical symptoms persist.
