Fungitell, bronch wash
Use
The Fungitell Beta-D-Glucan assay detects (1,3) β Beta-D-glucan from several pathogens including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., and others. It is useful in diagnosing fungal infections but does not detect certain species like Cryptococcus or Zygomycetes due to low levels of (1,3) β Beta-D-glucan.
Special Instructions
Research studies have evaluated the use of the Fungitell assay in BAL for immunocompromised patients and acute eosinophilic pneumonia.
Limitations
The Fungitell assay does not detect all fungal species. It does not detect the genus Cryptococcus or Zygomycetes, such as Absidia, Mucor, and Rhizopus, which do not produce (1,3) β Beta-D-glucan. Blastomyces dermatitidis is usually not detected due to little (1,3) β Beta-D-glucan produced in its yeast phase.
