Gelatin Porcine IgE
Use
This test is used for the detection of IgE antibodies against porcine gelatin, which is a component potentially present in pharmaceutical products and foods. Identifying sensitization to gelatin is important in diagnosing allergic reactions and guiding the management of patients with suspected gelatin allergy. This test provides quantitative assessment of specific IgE levels, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of allergic responses.
Special Instructions
Ensure the specimen is collected in a red-top or serum gel tube. Following collection, the specimen should be spun down and at least 0.5 mL of serum should be sent in a plastic vial. The specimen must be refrigerated during transport to maintain stability up to 28 days, ensuring optimal test performance.
Limitations
Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical history and other diagnostic tests as elevated IgE levels may not always correlate with clinical sensitivity. Additionally, false positives can occur due to non-specific binding. Factors such as lipemia should be avoided as they may lead to rejection of the specimen. The test is not FDA cleared or approved, and thus is used as a laboratory-developed test.
