Gentamicin, Peak, Serum
Use
Gentamicin is an antibiotic used to treat life-threatening blood infections caused by gram-negative bacilli. This test is useful for monitoring the adequacy of drug clearance during gentamicin therapy, helping to ensure the drug reaches therapeutic levels without exceeding toxic concentrations.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Therapeutics Test Request (T831) with the specimen.
Limitations
Patient samples containing the drug sisomicin will yield falsely elevated values for gentamicin. High concentrations of penicillins or cephalosporins can inactivate gentamicin in vitro under certain conditions. Samples should be assayed immediately if other antibiotics are used. Heterophile antibodies may cause erroneous results.
