Gentamicin, Trough, Serum
Use
This test is useful for monitoring the adequacy of drug clearance during gentamicin therapy. Gentamicin is an antibiotic used to treat life-threatening infections, particularly those caused by gram-negative bacilli. The test helps ensure therapeutic levels are achieved and maintained while minimizing the risk of toxicity, particularly ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
Special Instructions
Ensure that the serum gel tubes are centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. For red-top tubes, serum should be centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection.
Limitations
Patient samples that contain the drug sisomicin may yield falsely elevated gentamicin values. High concentrations of penicillins or cephalosporins can inactivate gentamicin in vitro. During testing of patients receiving these antibiotics, samples should be assayed immediately or stored frozen to avoid false results. Interfering heterophile antibodies occur at low frequency and can cause erroneous results.
