Glucose, Body Fluid
Use
The Glucose, Body Fluid test aids in the diagnosis of infection using body fluid specimens. Measuring glucose concentrations in body fluids helps assess the glycemic state and can indicate increased cellularity, glycolysis, infection, or malignancy. Low glucose levels in pleural, pericardial, or synovial fluids may suggest septic conditions or inflammation, though they are not specific to infection. These measurements are particularly useful when serum comparisons are made, helping differentiate between conditions like spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and gastrointestinal perforation, or mucinous from non-mucinous pancreatic cysts.
Special Instructions
For spinal fluid specimens, order GLSF / Glucose, Spinal Fluid. Testing will be changed to GLSF if this test is ordered on that specimen type. Date and time of collection and specimen source are required. Ensure to centrifuge samples to remove cellular material and transfer into a plastic vial, indicating the specimen source and source location on the label.
Limitations
Body fluid glucose results must be interpreted alongside other clinical findings. Specimens not separated from cells immediately may show falsely decreased glucose due to ongoing cellular metabolism. Conditions like Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia may cause unreliable results. Testing should not be solely relied upon for diagnostic decisions without considering comprehensive clinical assessments.
