Goat's Milk, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to goat's milk by identifying the specific allergen responsible for triggering allergic reactions. It is beneficial for determining allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes and can confirm sensitization prior to starting immunotherapy. It's also used to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens, such as insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. However, the test is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to confirm residual sensitivity or in cases where medical management does not rely on allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
Ensure specimen collection follows proper protocols: Centrifuge and aliquot the serum into a plastic vial. If ordering manually, complete and send the Allergen Test Request Form with the specimen.
Limitations
The presence of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergic disease, but results must be interpreted in a clinical context. High levels of IgE antibodies do not always correlate with clinical severity of allergic reactions. False positives may occur in individuals with very high serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
