Grass Panel # 2, Serum
Use
This multi-allergen IgE antibody panel is used to diagnose allergies to Bahia, Bermuda, Johnson, June/Kentucky blue, rye, and timothy grasses. It helps in defining which allergens are responsible for eliciting allergic reactions or anaphylactic episodes. This test aids in confirming sensitization before starting immunotherapy and investigating specific allergic reactions to various allergens, including insect venom, drugs, and chemicals. It is useful for identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses but not recommended for patients previously treated with immunotherapy where determining residual clinical sensitivity is not crucial.
Special Instructions
This test uses a pooled allergen reagent, and only a single qualitative class result with concentration is reported for the panel. It is suitable as a first-tier test for allergic diseases due to its cost-effectiveness and lower specimen volume requirement. Following a positive result, individual allergen testing may be needed to pinpoint specific allergens within the panel.
Limitations
IgE antibody testing is not useful for patients who have undergone immunotherapy to assess remaining clinical sensitivity. It is also not recommended for situations where medical management does not rely on identifying specific allergen sensitivities. False positives may occur in individuals with significantly elevated serum IgE levels due to nonspecific binding. Test results should be interpreted in context, considering possible clinical irrelevance of measured sensitivities.
