Grass Panel # 3, Serum
Use
The Grass Panel #3 is useful for establishing a diagnosis of allergy to cultivated rye, rye, sweet vernal, timothy, and velvet leaf. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, such as allergic responses and anaphylactic episodes. The panel can confirm sensitization before beginning immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, testing IgE antibodies is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or when medical management does not depend on identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
This multi-allergen IgE antibody panel combines with the measurement of IgE in serum as an appropriate first-order test for allergic disease. It requires less specimen volume and cost for ruling out allergic response; however, individual allergen responses cannot be identified. Follow-up testing must be performed in case of a positive test to differentiate between individual allergens in the panel. Only one result is generated for each panel.
Limitations
This test does not differentiate individual allergen responses. False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases. Individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may still have measurable IgE antibody levels in serum, so test results must be interpreted in clinical context.
