Green Pea, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to green pea and for identifying allergens responsible for eliciting allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. It aids in confirming sensitization before starting immunotherapy and in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens, including insect venom, drugs, and chemicals. Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergic disease.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request form with the specimen. Ensure the specimen is centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial. The specimen should be transported refrigerated, and the report is usually available within 1 to 3 days of receipt.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies may not be useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists. False positives can occur due to nonspecific binding of IgE antibodies. The test must be interpreted in the context of the clinical scenario as some measurable IgE levels may not correlate with clinical significance.
