Green String Bean, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to green string bean and defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It identifies allergens responsible for allergic response and/or anaphylactic episode, confirms sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or in patients in whom the medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
Complete and send the Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen if not ordering electronically. For multiple allergens, ensure to submit appropriate specimen volume considering the number of allergens requested.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum, which may lead to false-positive results. High levels of serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) may cause nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases, leading to false positives. It is important to interpret test results in the clinical context to avoid confusion.
