Growth Hormone Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Growth hormone (GH) immunostain is primarily used to aid in the identification of growth hormone adenomas. Growth hormone is a 21-kD polypeptide hormone that stimulates protein synthesis and may act via somatomedins. It is produced by somatotroph cells which make up a significant proportion of anterior pituitary cells. This test utilizes immunohistochemistry to show cytoplasmic staining of normal pituitary somatotroph cells and GH adenomas, aiding in their identification.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical component of the stain and does not provide pathologist interpretation. It's important to order a pathology consultation separately if interpretation is needed. Orders must be accompanied by specific labels on transport containers as per shipping instructions.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation; it is only for the technical performance of the stain. Improper specimen handling, such as sending wet, frozen, or non-formalin fixed tissue, can result in rejection. Environmental factors affecting slide charge can impact results. Ensure best practices in handling, such as cutting paraffin sections within 6 weeks.
