Guar Gum, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to guar gum. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, including allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes. It assists in confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. IgE antibody testing is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity or where management does not depend on allergen identification.
Special Instructions
Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases. IgE antibodies must be interpreted in the context of the clinical scenario as some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivities may still have measurable IgE antibodies.
